Description
On average, homosexual people display more sex atypicality (eg, femininity in men) than heterosexual people do. We examined whether homosexual people were more sex-atypical as children, whether homosexual adults could control sex-atypical behaviors, and whether very sex-atypical people underestimated their own sex atypicality. In study I, 82 raters, including heterosexual and homosexual men and women, watched childhood movies from 88 targets. Prehomosexual children were judged more sex-atypical, on average, than same sex preheterosexual children. This difference emerged early, carried into adulthood, was validated by self-report, and did not seem encouraged by past social influences.
